This painting is from a body of work dedicated to the mysteries of the circus performer. Although they often make it look easy, the discipline and dedication required will remain unspoken so that they may bring to us their insights of magic. As a painter, sometimes feel like I am walking this same wire as I work. It is a constant correction to keep the balance. The will to entertain and enlighten prevails over the tapestry of mistakes we weave into success. ~ Daniel Merriam

"The inspiration for the creature is Lua, my dog. Although Lua lounges around the studio, offering anatomic poses, the impulse behind the creature is a personality that has been manifesting itself within my work for years and, probably, represents myself. This creature could have ferocious power or be as gentle as a lamb. My muse and guardian angel understands me like no other and knows she must keep a tight rein on my actions for I could upset the universe if left to my own devises."
Regarded as one of the world's foremost watercolorists, Daniel Merriam has captured the hearts and curiosities of many. His highly detailed dream-like images define landscapes of imagination that are uniquely his own, yet accessible enough to inspire us all to take a step beyond what we have known as our threshold of consciousness.
