Roza Goneva - About the Artist
Born in the 13 centuries old Bulgarian town of Kyustendil (ancient Pautalia), Roza grew up in a country rich with history. She was surrounded by the divinity of Byzantine art and the richness of the Bulgarian Iconography, which have helped her in developing a distinctive style. At the age of 5, Roza began formal lessons in painting and within a year won an art competition, receiving her first of several awards to come. She received her Masters of Arts, graduating with honors from the prestigious Nikolai Pavlovitch University of Arts, Sofia. She began her artistic career as a tapestry artist under the direction of Marin Varbanov, Professor of Hand-woven Textiles. Roza visited and stayed in Vienna for two years where she studied in depth the great works of Gustav Klimpt and other masters of the Secession. Combining elements of her homeland and influences of Art Nouveau, Roza created a style that is uniquely her own. Her work often includes a textured base for bronze, silver and gold-leafing, which reflects the plaster work of of ancient frescos. Her palette enjoys an opulent use of gold tones, but is balanced by an emphatic expression of vibrant colors, in both oils and acrylic. Reflecting the style of icons, her subject matter often takes a mythical and legendary turn, unfolding a tale from the canvas. Roza's highly stylized portraiture in the foreground draws the viewer into the image while the brilliant an dintricately detailed background elevates the viewer to a more dreamlike state. In 1988 Roza was the recipient of the eminent "Eiffel Tower" Award of the French Film Institute in Paris, France, for her art work in the movie "Medusas." Her unique style has captured the hearts of many European collectors and firmly established her market in Europe. In 1998 Roza moved to the USA. Since her debut in 2000 at ArtExpo in New York, Roza has enthralled the attention of many serious American art collectors and fashioned a steady demand for her paintings throughout the country. In 2000, Roza was awarded "Best Figurative Painting" by Art Trends Magazine, USA, for her painting "River of Love." SELECTED COLLECTIONS SELECTED AWARDS |
